The 626, which replaced the 621 on the assembly lines, was the first truck of the Turin-based company with an advanced cabin (COE), that is, with the engine totally contained inside the cabin. The chassis was spars on two axles, with front steering and rear driven wheels, the 5750 cm³ 6-cylinder diesel engine developed 70 hp at 2200 rpm and was characterized by the innovative arrangement on guides that allowed a simple and rapid replacement. In 1952 Italy adopts a new highway code, which imposes new regulations regarding the extent of trucks.

Because of this, at the end of the year, Fiat replaces the 680N, in production since 1948, with a new model: the 682N. The first model produced resumes (with a slight increase in power) the engine of the 680, that is, a 6 cylinder with 10.17 liters of displacement and 122 mm of piston bore, and is therefore called Fiat 682 “122”. The chassis, cab, gearbox and differential are newly designed.
